Heavenly Peace Temple

Heavenly Peace Temple BeijingHeavenly Peace Temple is located at Guang’anmen. The most outstanding feature of the temple is the Buddhist pagoda which was one of the highest buildings in the ancient capital  and a valuable memento of the Liao dynasty. An octagonal brick-structured of eaves, was erected on a square platform. All the Buddhist statues, doors, windows, rafters and pillars are exquisitely carved in relief in imitation of wood. Even looking closely, one can hardly tell them from real wooden carvings.

Heavenly Peace Temple was first built during the reign of Emperor Yanxing of the Northern Wei dynasty when it was called Bright Woods Temple. It has changed its name several times, to Expanding Cause Temple, Heavenly King Temple, and Great Peace Buddhist Temple, and got its present name in 1435. A 60-meter-high pagoda was added to the temple in the Liao dynasty (907-1125).

Heavenly Peace Temple BeijingThe bottom of the pagoda is in the form of  a huge Sumeru pedestal. Three layers of huge lotus petals carved on the pedestal support the first storey of the pagoda. On the four sides of the first story, facing the four directions. are relief sculptures of heavenly guardians and arched gates.

Above are thirteen levels of eaves, very close to each other. with no doors or windows. It is a typical pagoda of the Liao and Jin periods. The eaves diminish in size as they progress upward, giving the pagoda a slight scroll shape. The pagoda is solid, without stairs inside or outside. The structure and shape of the pagoda have remained the same since it was built, though repairs have been made over the years.

The late celebrated Chinese architect Liang Sicheng praised the design of the pagoda as having musical rhythm and a masterpiece of ancient architectural design. Heavenly Peace Temple was renovated in 2002 and it was opened as as a site to hold religious activities in July,2007.

Confucius

Confucius (551 BC- 479 BC), whose personal name was Qiu and styled Zhongni, was born in the Lu State. Confucius was a great thinker and educator in the late Spring and Autumn Period. He was also the founder of Confucianism.

Confucius

Confucius

Confucius was a descendant of a noble family in the Song State, who descended from royals of the Yin Dynasty. When he was still a child, his father died, and his family went to a decline as a result, but he studied very hard. He once said:” from any three people walking, I will find something to learn for sure“. Later, Confucius began to travel about and instruct disciples. In his life, Confucius had instructed more than 3000 disciples, some were from poor families. In this way, Confucius had gradually changed the tradition that nobody but nobilities had the right to receive education. In his later years, Confucius compiled and preserved many literary works of ancient times, including The Book of Songs, The Book of Documents and The Book of Changes.

Even in modern times, many of Confucius’ ideas are quite valuable. For instance, Confucius established and developed a moral and ethical system called ren (benevolence). To achieve “ren“, he believed that one should show benevolence to others, and therefore ” Do as you would like to be done by others.” Confucius also believed that “Gentlemen are harmonious but different” which reveals that difference between people should be recognized in dealing with human relationship, thereby it is inappropriate to judge with a single standard, and thus the harmony and stabilization of a society will be accomplished. In terms of education, Confucius maintained that teachers should enlighten students to think independently, and that students should formulate their own opinions when acquiring knowledge from textbooks.

Laozi, Zhuangzi and Taoism

Laozi

Laozi

The founder of Taoism was Laozi(Lao Tzu or Lao Tsu), whose family name was Li and given name was Er. He lived in the later years of the Spring and Autumn Period, and worked as an archivist in the Imperial Library of the Zhou’s court. His masterpiece Tao Te Ching ( The Book of the Way and Its Virtue), although with only about 5 000 characters, had a significant impact upon the thoughts of later generations. Laozi applied “Tao” to elucidating the origin and evolvement of the universe. Moreover, Laozi maintained that the characters and law of ” Tao” could be applied to guide people’s thinking and behavior, which should be in conformance with the nature.Laozi believed that what appears soft and weak can actually defeat what is hard and strong, inasmuch as what looks fragile is hard in nature.

Zhuangzi

Zhuangzi

Proficient in the philosophy of Laozi, Zhuangzi(Chuang Tzu) was an inheritor and promoter of Taoism. Zhuangzi, whose given name was Zhou, once worked as an official in charge of painting work at the town of Meng in the Song State. In the book bearing his name, Zhuangzi succeeded to and developed Laozi’s viewpoint that “Tao is defined by nature”, and claimed that everything exterior can be equated with self, and life and death are equal. What Zhuangzi had been pursuing is a spiritual realm of absolute freedom. Since there are so many similarities between Laozi and Zhuangzi in terms of thinking, descendants usually mention them comparably.

Five Pagoda Temple

Five Pagoda Temple BeijingSituated to the north of Beijing Zoo in Haidian District of Beijing, the Five Pagoda Temple , and Indian-styled temple, is an ideal place to appreciate the splendid history of Buddhism and architecture in China as well as to enjoy the pleasant scene and special tranquility of the temple.

With its original name of True Awakening Temple, the temple was first constructed during the reign of Yongle of the Ming dynasty and was completed in 1473. At that time, and Indian monk came to China to present Emperor Chengzu, the third emperor of the Ming dynasty, five golden statues of Buddha and a draft of an Indian diamond throne pagoda. Using this draft, the temple with the special architecture of five pagodas was built with the Western Hills at the back and the rippling Long River in front.

During the reign of Emperor Qianlong of the Qing dynasty(1736-1796), the temple twice underwent extensive renovations and was renamed Dazhengjue Temple. In the succeeding years until modern times, the temple has been totally renovated. In 1982, it opened to the public. Today it is popularly refered to as the Five Pagoda Temple.

The main architecture in the Five Pagoda Temple is the grand construction of the Indian diamond throne pagoda, wherein five pagodas stand on a square foundation known as the throne. It does not copy the Indian mode, but has its own unique style fusing the Indian pattern with traditional Chinese architectural art and carving. The whole construction, made of bricks and bluestones, has two parts. One is the 25-foot-high square foundation with six storeys. The first storey with a high of 5.8 feet is the base of the whole construction. Each of the five storeys above has a narrow eave and carvings of small Buddhist shrines and Buddhas. The other part is the five pagodas rising from their square bases on top of the throne foundation. One pagoda is in the center and the others in the four corners of the foundation respectively. The central one of 26 feet in height is a little higher than the others and has 13 storeys. All five pagodas are dainty in appearance and artistic in desig n. They are all engraved with delicate images of Buddha, bodhi trees, Sanskrit letters and Buddhist symboles as well as lions, elephants, horses and other animal figures. The images of Buddha on these five pagodas represent Buddha in five directions according to the sutra. In addition, it is interesting that the south wall of the base storey of the central pagoda is carved with a pair of footprints of Buddha, meaning that the spirit of Buddha spreads everywhere.

The temple complex, with the diamond throne pagoda as its essence, is an outstanding accomplishment of Buddhist art. The carvings in Sanskrit also provide priceless material for research of the ancient Indian language and Tibetan Buddhism. Today, bearing a history of overy 500years, the Five Pagoda Temple is not only a solemn religious relic, but also the location of the Beijing Art Museum of Stone Carvings which displays more than 2000 pieces of stone artworks for tourist. It opened to the public in October,1982.

Three Friends in Cold Weather

Pine

Pine

Pine, Bamboo, and Plum have always been regarded by Chinese people as the most beloved plants because they all thrive through the cold winter days, just like friends who cherish the same ideas welcoming the advent of the spring together. For this very reason, they are called ” Three Friends in Cold Winter”, symbolizing the noble characters esteemed and pursued by Chinese people.

In China, the figure of  ” Three Friends in Cold Winter” is very common, which can be seen on containers, clothes and infrastructures. People with lofty ideals respect them for their pride and honor, while the common ones for their ever-lasting energy.

Pines are ever-green trees with strong vitality. They flourish even in cold winter, for this very reason they are honored with a character of strong will. However, they are more generally regarded as the symbol of longevity among the masses.

Bamboo

Bamboo

When the day of Cold Dew arrives, many plants are withered, while bamboo survives and flourishes as usual in the cold wind. Because bamboo has hollow joints and is upstanding, it is gifted with characters of inflexibility and modesty and is honored as a “gentleman”. While Chinese have the folk custom of firing the bamboo cracker to break away from the old and evil, bamboo is also regarded as the symbol for security and auspice, as shown in the traditional decorative paintings.

The plum is one kind of the famous flowers of China. They are appreciated for their nobleness purity and modesty which encourage people to improve themselves. Therefore they have always been cherished and extolled by Chinese poets in the past. Plums are also characterized as the advent of good news. Stories about plum and its meaning have been widespread for a long time.

They are still some other plants, such as chrysanthemum, orchid and lotus that are given a noble character mostly aspired after by people.
